We don't get to do Thursday night football very often, but what a great night it was! The band and cheerleaders led the energy from the stands, and the football team found the grit to punch one in the win column! At halftime, the Roughneck Band presented the entire first movement of "Legends Never Die", which was a huge goal to be met for the first game. Every day is a great day to be a Roughneck, and Thursday night was no exception!
As you may have heard over the PA after the halftime show, our Section of the Week was our Pit section...they are doing a fantastic job with some difficult music, many times being featured with no winds playing at all! Also announced was our "Pumpjack Award" winner, Danielle MacDonald. This is something new we've started this year. The award goes to a student who stands out as a worker who just doesn't stop. Danielle spends every minute of a rehearsal engaged in improvement of herself and others, constantly helping and encouraging those around her. Congratulations to our Pit and to Danielle! SHOUT OUTS Our Drum Majors this year have big shoes to fill, and they are getting the job done! What the crowd sees at games is a small portion of what a Drum Major does...and it's quite the responsibility to stand up in front of all of those people and lead the band through a halftime show! These young ladies are gaining confidence in their conducting, and their leadership in rehearsals is the backbone of our success thus far. Shea, Autum, and Daniella...thank you for all that you do! This week's Rookie of the Week is Ryan Pope! Ryan works hard and makes improvement every day as he navigates the challenges of being new to marching band. Keep it up, Ryan! GAME DAY INFO This week is a home game against the Dalhart Wolves! Kickoff is at 7:30 pm. Other information has been sent to each band student's school email account. Here's to another great week!

Another great week for the Roughneck Band! About 70% of the opener is on the field, which is a huge credit to the talent and work ethic of these students. That is a lot to do in just 4 days of learning drill! We are excited to take this show on the road this next week!
SHOUT OUTS Huge shout out this week to our Drill Instructors! These students have latched on to their new UDB app, and they are a huge reason we've been able to learn drill so efficiently this week. Thank you for your leadership! Also, let's recognize our Rookie of the Week: Allie Weber! Allie has been a fantastic addition to the cornet section and always wears a smile. Welcome to the Roughneck Band, Allie! GAME DAY INFO A travel itinerary has been sent to each band student's school email account. This is the only place itineraries will be available other than a hard copy, which is available by request in the band office. Tickets are available online at ticketspicket.com. The stadium is cashless, and there will be a card reader at the gate. We'll see you there! Another great week for the Roughneck Band! This team continues to work hard...they're making great progress on their music, and beginning this next week, we will start putting marching drill on the field. We had our first performance of the year in the Oil Patch Days parade yesterday, and the next will be at the first football game on Thursday, August 25th!
We are happy to have several new people with us this year! The flute section welcomes Emily, the percussion section welcomes Alex, the cornet section welcomes Allie and Kassady, and the baritone section welcomes Brayden and Rylan. These new Roughneck Band members have been knocking it out of the park in their first couple of weeks...their talents and personalities are a wonderful addition to our band family! THANK YOU to all of the parents who helped to provide and/or serve treats after Summer Band practices these past two weeks, and thanks to Andrea Corley for organizing the efforts! We have such wonderful support from our extended band family. Thank you for making Sundown such a special place! And so it begins...the first day of school is this coming Tuesday! The band will rehearse every Tuesday night from 7:00 to 9:00 for the remainder of the marching season, and will perform on Friday nights. Competition begins in October. We are looking forward to a great 2022 season for the Roughneck Band! What a fantastic start to the 2022 marching season! If you happened to drive by the practice field while we were out there, you saw well over 100 students putting in the work! Much progress was made on show music and a few other tunes this week, as well as some solid marching fundamentals already starting to develop.
Our 8th graders are off to a great start! On Tuesday, we had a "last person standing" competition with the 8th graders, and Katy Flores was the champ! Then, on Thursday, we did the same with the full band. The 8th graders hung in there, with Addi Hord still standing in the final 10! But it was Nathan Flores that was the last one standing that evening...way to go, Nathan and Katy! Roughneck Band leadership has been SUPER this week! Our drum majors, section leaders, and drill instructors, and HOFs have taken ownership of their positions and provided a great deal of teaching, coaching, and support at the student level. These students are already pointing the band toward an exciting run in 2022! Looking forward to Week 2! |
