Another fantastic week for the Roughneck Band! As Mr. Bibb said in the office, we really "turned a corner" on our music this week...the little details are coming together! You may have noticed some "foreign objects" on the field this week -- we lovingly call them "Field Enhancement Objects" (FEOs), and we hope you like what it adds to our show!
As you heard announced after the halftime show on Friday, our Section of the Week was our tuba section. These students are making big improvements in their overall sounds as they try to balance this big ol' band! Also announced was our "Pumpjack Award" winner, Darby Bussell, who is a member of our percussion section. Darby is an 8th grader and was tasked with learning a bass drum part and 39 sets of drill in one week...a tall order for anyone, and she really came through for her team! Our Rookie of the Week is Sophia Rodriguez. Sophia an 8th grade flute player who comes to rehearsal with a great work ethic! And finally, this week's Outstanding Leader is Nathan Flores. Nathan is a junior and a Section Leader in the cornet section, as well as a varsity football player, and he does a wonderful job of bringing up the younger players in his section. Congratulations to Sophia, Darby, Nathan, and the tuba section! SHOUT OUTS The shout out for this week goes to our band sponsors...the band parents that go everywhere we go! The schedule for the first half of the season was quite the gauntlet with many miles traveled, and these folks are what makes it all work. They help monitor students in various situations, serve food, move equipment, call out the roll checks, and many other things that make our trips successful. We are grateful for their willingness to volunteer their time and energy to these students that we love dearly! GAME DAY INFO This week will be an open week for our Varsity and JV football teams. Have a great week!

After a week that felt like any given rehearsal could be knocked out by rain, we were able to rehearse every day this week! We are thankful for that, and we are thankful for these amazing band students who continue work hard, love others, and embrace excellence. The Roughneck Band was able to put our 3rd movement of the show on the field this week, and the first performance was a success!
As you heard announced after the halftime show on Friday, our Section of the Week was our clarinet section. If you hear some especially high sounds coming out of the band, you can know that these kids are stepping outside of their comfort zone and conquering a challenge! Also announced was our "Pumpjack Award" winner, Daniel Mauldin, who is a member of our baritone section. Daniel is a sophomore and a Section Leader in the baritone section who quickly memorizes his music and his sets so that he can be around the field helping others. Our Rookie of the Week is Bailey Corley! Bailey an 8th grade horn player, but that's not where you will find her in the show. She is playing the synthesizer and has a very difficult Part 3 of the show! And finally, this week's Outstanding Leader is Easton Smith. Easton is a senior and a clarinet Section Leader, as well as a HOF who goes above and beyond for his team. Congratulations to Bailey, Daniel, Easton, and the clarinet section! SHOUT OUTS The shout out for this week goes to Rene Rivera, Hunter Stanley, and Mike Richardson. These three gentlemen have made new things possible for the Roughneck Band this year -- some of which you have seen in our new band trailer, and some that you have not yet seen in what we are calling "field enhancement objects" (FEO's) that will be a part of our show this year. We couldn't accomplish these things without these gentlemen! GAME DAY INFO This week we are back at home in Slaughter Field as we face the Roosevelt Eagles! We will once again perform Parts 1, 2, and 3 of our show as we work to improve over last week's performance. As always, itinerary information will be sent to each band student's school email account. Have a great week! It was a great week for the Roughneck Band! We were able to debut the rest of Part 2 of our show, marking the halfway point! These students continue to work hard and improve every day.
As you heard announced after the halftime show on Friday, our Section of the Week was our flute section. Have you seen those fantastic flute angles?! Also announced was our "Pumpjack Award" winner, Kaytlin Clausen, who is a member of our cornet section. As a freshman, Kaytlin has the passion and leadership presence of an upperclassman, and she does a wonderful job of leading by example. Our Rookie of the Week is Bethany Honesto! Bethany an 8th grade cornet player who puts in the extra time to be great! And finally, this week's Outstanding Leader is Peyton Richardson. Being a student leader comes with many challenges, and Peyton takes them head-on challenge head on! Congratulations to Kaytlin, Bethany, Peyton, and the flute section! SHOUT OUTS The shout out for this week goes to the fantastic band staff that I get to work with every day. Ashley Blount brings a unique passion and energy to our office and our rehearsals, as well as a fresh approach and new ideas for the changing art of marching band. Mack Bibb's unmatched wisdom and wit keep our feet on the ground, and we all hope to be as good of a teacher as he is some day. Tricia Nevarez is, in my opinion, the very best color guard instructor around! Amber Mauldin helps with color guard, is a bus sponsor, and anything else you might imagine a band director's wife being a part of. Tristan Nock and John Rogers work wonders with our battery and pit percussion! These are some of my favorite people in the world, and the Roughneck Band is what it is because of the efforts of these individuals. They love kids and they love what we do! GAME DAY INFO This week is an away game in Wink! If the weather cooperates and we are able to rehearse outside this week, we hope to have Part 3 of the show on the field! As always, itinerary information has been sent to each band student's school email account. Have a great week! The Dalhart game will be remembered for a very long time, and for so many wonderful reasons. Both of these schools suffered loss in the past year, and the support shown between the communities has been incredible. It was an honor for our Roughneck Band students to combine with the Golden Wolf Band at halftime to play our school songs together in honor of Yahir, Preston, Eric, and Kennedi. And what an exhilarating finish to a hard-fought football game, what a crazy environment in the stands (I need to bring earplugs next week), and what a great night overall!
As you heard announced after the halftime show on Friday, our Section of the Week was our mallet/keyboard section! These students are dependable week after week, always prepared and ready for the next thing. Also announced was our "Pumpjack Award" winner, Araceli Ibarra, who is a junior and Section Leader for the flute section! You will always find Araceli going above and beyond to take care of those around her as she is also a HOF. The Rookie of the Week was Riley Scifres! Riley is an 8th grade horn player and is already a huge contributor to that "Sundown Sound". Congratulations to Araceli, Riley, and the mallet/keyboard section! SHOUT OUTS The shout out for this week goes to the Sundown ISD administration and School Board. The students and staff of Sundown ISD are blessed to have unwavering support from these folks. From financial support to just a simple "good job" pat on the back and everything in between, these individuals support our students and staff with all of their hearts, and we are so very thankful. GAME DAY INFO This week's game will be Homecoming against Farwell! Kickoff is at 7:00 pm on Friday. Other information will be sent to each band student's school email account. It will be nice to be in our own stadium! Have a great week! |
